The GOULY system connects via 2.4 GHz WiFi only. Most routers broadcast both bands. Here is how to set it up.
If you are setting up your GOULY lighting system and wondering whether it supports 5 GHz WiFi, here is the short answer: no, the GOULY system connects on 2.4 GHz only.
This is by design, not a limitation.
Why 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz
The certified GOULY control box communicates with your home WiFi network over the 2.4 GHz band. This is a deliberate engineering choice for outdoor lighting hardware:
- Better range. 2.4 GHz signals travel farther than 5 GHz, which matters when the control box is mounted on an exterior wall or in a garage
- Better wall penetration. 2.4 GHz passes through walls, siding, and building materials more effectively. 5 GHz signals weaken quickly through solid obstacles
- More reliable for IoT devices. Nearly all smart home devices, from thermostats to garage door openers, use 2.4 GHz for the same reasons. The GOULY system follows established best practices
5 GHz offers faster data speeds, but a lighting controller does not need high bandwidth. It needs a stable, long-range connection, and 2.4 GHz delivers that consistently.

How to connect if your router combines both bands
Most modern routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Some combine them under a single network name (SSID), while others separate them.
If your router uses a single combined SSID:
The GOULY controller will automatically connect to the 2.4 GHz band during setup. Most routers handle this seamlessly. If the controller has trouble connecting, you may need to temporarily split the bands in your router settings so the 2.4 GHz network has its own name.
If your router has separate network names:
Simply connect the GOULY system to the 2.4 GHz network during setup in the GOULY app. It is usually the one without "5G" in the name.
Quick setup tips:
- Make sure you are within range of your router during initial setup
- Use the 2.4 GHz network name and password when prompted in the app
- If the connection fails, check that your 2.4 GHz band is enabled in your router settings. Some users disable it accidentally
- Once connected, the controller maintains the connection automatically

Not a limitation
Every major smart home lighting platform uses 2.4 GHz for device communication. It is the industry standard for good reason. The GOULY system connects reliably over 2.4 GHz and works seamlessly with the GOULY app for full control of your permanent lighting system, including all designs, animations, and scheduling features.
