Whole run dark, one section dead, flickering after rain or falling off the house? The 6 common Govee permanent light problems and how to fix each one, plus how to reset the controller.
From our galleryYou open the Govee Home app to switch your roofline to a new colour and nothing happens. Maybe the whole run is dark. Maybe the first few lights work and everything after them is dead. Maybe the lights flicker, flash green, or come back wrong after a rainy night. Govee permanent outdoor lights are a popular DIY product, and when they stop working the fix is usually one of a handful of known causes.
This guide walks through those causes in order, from the 60-second checks to the point where troubleshooting stops being worth your time. It covers the original Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights (H705A, H705B, H705C) and the newer lines (Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, Pro and Prism). Where a model behaves differently, we say so.
If your lights are online but will not connect to the app or keep dropping off Wi-Fi, go straight to our guide to Govee permanent lights not connecting to Wi-Fi.

Quick checklist before you start
Run these four checks first. They clear a surprising number of "not working" cases:
- Check the power adapter and outlet. Plug a lamp into the same outlet. Exterior GFCI outlets trip after rain and cut power to the adapter without any warning in the app.
- Power cycle the control box. Unplug the adapter, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in.
- Force-close and update the Govee Home app. Then reopen it and check whether the device shows as online.
- Look at the run in daylight. Note exactly where the lights stop working. The location of the first dead light tells you more than anything the app shows.
If none of those fix it, work through the problems below in order.
Problem #1: the lights will not turn on at all
Symptoms: The whole run is dark. The app may show the device as online or offline.
Common causes:
- No power at the outlet. A tripped GFCI or breaker is the most common cause after rain or snow melt.
- A loose connector at the control box. The first connection between the control box and the first section carries everything. If it has pulled loose or taken on water, nothing downstream lights.
- A failed power adapter or control box. Less common, but it happens, particularly after a power surge.
Fixes, in order:
- Reset the GFCI and confirm the outlet has power.
- Unplug the adapter, then unplug and firmly re-seat the connector between the control box and the first section. Check that its waterproof cap is fully closed.
- Power back on and test with the button on the control box, not just the app. If the lights respond to the button but not the app, it is a connection problem, not a hardware problem.
- If nothing responds to the button either, the adapter or control box is the likely failure. Contact the seller for a warranty replacement (see the warranty section).
Problem #2: some lights work, everything after a point is dead
Symptoms: The first part of the run lights normally. From one specific light onward, everything is dark or stuck on one colour.
Why it happens: Permanent outdoor lights pass both power and the colour signal from one light to the next. When one light or one connector fails, it can cut off every light after it. Govee owners report the same pattern: a segment dies a few lights in, and the cause turns out to be a single faulty light or connector cutting off the rest of the run.
Fixes, in order:
- Find the first dead light. The fault is almost always at that light, or at the connector just before it.
- Re-seat the nearest connector. Unplug it, check for water or green corrosion on the pins, dry it, and plug it back in with the waterproof cap fully closed.
- Swap sections to isolate the fault. If you have a spare or a shorter section, connect it in place of the suspect one. If the rest of the run comes back, that section is the problem.
- Replace the faulty section. Govee's own manual directs owners to contact Govee support for a replacement when lights fail. In practice that usually means replacing a whole section, and reinstalling it yourself.
Problem #3: too many sections on one controller
Symptoms: Lights at the far end are dim, the wrong colour, or flicker, and it gets worse as you add extensions.
Why it happens: Every controller has a limit. Govee's manuals list a maximum of 9 sections per controller on the original lights, and Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 lists 45 m (150 ft) with 9 sections and 4 extension cables. The Pro and Prism lines go up to 60 m (200 ft) on their largest kits. Running two kits from one controller, or adding extensions past the limit, overloads the run.
Fix: Split the run. Use a second power adapter and control box for the extra length, then group the two in the app so they act as one. If your house needs more length than one kit supports, this is the correct setup, not a workaround.
Problem #4: lights flicker, flash, or show the wrong colour
Symptoms: Flickering, sections stuck on red or green, random flashing, or colours that do not match what the app shows.
Common causes:
- Water in a connector. This is the most common real-world cause after rain. Snap connectors are the weak point in any clip-on system.
- An overloaded run. See Problem #3.
- A failing light. One bad light can scramble the colour signal for the lights after it.
Fixes, in order:
- Note where the flicker starts. Check and dry the connector at that point, and re-close its waterproof cap.
- Reduce the run length to within the controller's limit and test again.
- Factory reset the controller (see Problem #6) and re-add it in the app.
- If one area keeps flickering after the connectors are dry and sealed, replace that section.
Problem #5: lights coming off the house
Symptoms: Clips or tape letting go, lights sagging under the eaves or pointing the wrong way.
Why it happens: Govee's install instructions call for both the adhesive tape and the mounting clips, on a clean surface. Adhesive needs warm conditions to bond properly, and a kit installed in late fall often never bonds well. Freeze-thaw cycles and summer heat work it loose over time.
Fix: Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, re-mount with clips every 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 in), and hold each one in place for several seconds. Do it on a warm, dry day. If lights keep falling, the mounting method is the problem, not the install.
Problem #6: how to factory reset Govee permanent outdoor lights
A factory reset clears a controller that is stuck, unresponsive, or will not re-pair.
- Make sure the control box has power.
- Press and hold the button on the control box for 5 to 10 seconds, until the lights flash or the indicator changes. (Govee's original manual says 5 seconds; its install guide says about 10.)
- Release the button, open the Govee Home app and add the device again.
For a soft reset without losing your settings, unplug the power adapter and plug it back in.
Calgary winters: the temperature rating matters
Govee lists the operating temperature for its original lights at -20°C to 45°C, and for Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 and Pro at -20°C (-4°F) to 60°C. Only the Prism line is rated to -30°C (-22°F).
Calgary and area regularly drop below -20°C, and below -30°C during cold snaps. Running lights outside their rated range puts the controller, the connectors and the lights under stress they were not rated for. Govee's warranty policy also excludes damage caused by extreme temperatures, so check which model you have before you rely on a winter claim.
Warranty: what to expect
- Coverage: Govee states a 3-year warranty on its permanent outdoor lights.
- Where you bought it matters. Govee handles claims for lights bought directly from Govee. Lights bought at a retailer such as Costco, Walmart or Best Buy are handled through that store.
- Exclusions: Govee's policy excludes damage from extreme temperatures, water and improper use, and purchases from unauthorized resellers.
- The part the warranty does not cover is your time. A replacement section still has to be taken down and reinstalled by you, on a ladder.
When troubleshooting is not worth it
If you have already:
- re-seated and dried every connector,
- reset the controller more than once,
- replaced a section and had another one fail,
- or spent a weekend on a ladder chasing flicker,
the problem is usually not a setting you missed. It is the combination of clip-on connectors exposed to weather, a temperature rating that does not match a Calgary winter, and a system where every repair is a DIY repair.

Frequently asked questions
Start with power: exterior GFCI outlets often trip after rain and cut power to the adapter. Reset the outlet, then unplug the adapter and firmly re-seat the connector between the control box and the first section. If the lights still do not respond to the button on the control box, the adapter or control box has likely failed and needs a warranty replacement.
Permanent lights pass power and the colour signal from one light to the next, so one failed light or connector can cut off everything after it. Find the first dead light, check and dry the connector just before it, and re-seal its waterproof cap. If that does not fix it, the section needs replacing.
With the control box powered on, press and hold its button for 5 to 10 seconds until the lights flash or the indicator changes. Then add the device again in the Govee Home app. For a soft reset, unplug the adapter and plug it back in.
Govee rates its original lights, Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 and Pro to -20°C, and only the Prism line to -30°C. Calgary regularly drops below -20°C, and Govee's warranty excludes damage from extreme temperatures. The permanent systems we install are rated from -40°C to +50°C.
Govee states a 3-year warranty on its permanent outdoor lights. Claims for lights bought directly from Govee go through Govee; lights bought at retailers such as Costco, Walmart or Best Buy are handled by that store. The warranty replaces parts, but taking down and reinstalling a section is still up to you.
