Do Permanent Lights Damage Your House?

No. Permanent lighting track mounts to the fascia with sealed fasteners, creating a weatherproof installation that actually protects the surface. Here is how it works.

It is a fair question. You are mounting something to the exterior of your home permanently. Will it cause damage over time?

The short answer is no. A properly installed permanent lighting system does not damage your house. In fact, the way it mounts actually helps protect the surfaces it attaches to, especially compared to what temporary lights do every year.

How the system mounts

The GOULY Gen 3 system uses a purpose-built aluminum track that attaches to the fascia or soffit with screws. The track serves as both the mounting channel and the housing for the wiring and LED puck modules.

Key points about the installation:

  • Screws into fascia or soffit only. There is no roof penetration, no drilling into shingles, no interference with flashing or roofing materials
  • Sealed mounting points. Professional installation includes proper sealing at each fastener to prevent moisture entry behind the fascia
  • No adhesive. The system does not rely on glue, tape, or adhesive strips that can degrade, peel, or leave residue
  • Lightweight aluminum. The track adds minimal load to the fascia. It is not heavy hardware bolted to the structure

The result is a clean, secure mount that sits flush against the roofline and does not compromise the building envelope.

How temporary lights actually cause damage

The irony is that the lights people put up and take down every year do far more damage than a permanent system that stays in place.

Temporary Christmas lights are held up with:

  • Plastic clips that wedge under shingles, lifting edges and breaking the seal strip
  • Staples driven into fascia, leaving holes that collect moisture
  • Nails and hooks that crack paint and wood over time
  • Gutter clips that bend and strain gutter edges

Every year the cycle repeats. Climb the ladder, attach clips, run extension cords, take it all down in January, pull out the staples, and leave behind a slightly more damaged roofline than the year before.

After five or ten years of this, the fascia has dozens of small holes, the paint is chipped, the shingle edges are lifted, and moisture has been finding its way in through every puncture point.

A permanent system eliminates all of that. One professional installation. No annual mounting and removal. No cumulative damage.

The track actually protects the surface

Once the aluminum track is mounted, it covers and shields the fascia surface beneath it. The track acts as a barrier against:

  • UV exposure on the fascia paint or finish
  • Direct rain and snow contact along the covered strip
  • Physical abrasion from wind-blown debris

The section of fascia under the track often looks better than the exposed sections after several years, because it has been protected from the elements.

This is the opposite of damage. The system preserves the surface it is mounted to.

Professional installation standards

The quality of the installation matters. A properly trained crew knows how to:

  • Select the right fasteners for the fascia material (wood, composite, aluminum)
  • Seal each mounting point to prevent moisture intrusion
  • Route wiring inside the track so nothing is exposed
  • Handle corners, peaks, valleys, and transitions cleanly
  • Avoid overdriving screws that could crack or split the fascia

This is one of the key reasons professional installation is recommended over DIY. An experienced installer protects your home during the process. A first-time DIY attempt may not.

What about the control box?

The certified GOULY control box is mounted in a protected location, typically inside a garage, under a covered eave, or in a utility area. It is not exposed to the elements in a way that would affect your home's exterior.

The control box connects to the home's electrical panel through standard low-voltage wiring. There is no heavy conduit, no large penetrations, and no structural modification required.

The bottom line

Permanent lights do not damage your house. The GOULY Gen 3 system mounts securely to the fascia with sealed fasteners, requires zero roof penetration, and actually shields the surface beneath the track from weather and UV exposure.

The real damage comes from the annual cycle of temporary light installation and removal, staples, clips, hooks, and holes accumulating year after year.
